REVIEW: Talking As Fast As I Can by Lauren Graham

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the premiere of Gilmore Girls, we’re beginning our annual Netflix binge of the iconic show. But in true Rory Gilmore style, we couldn’t help picking up a book, too.

Talking As Fast As I Can is a light, kicky memoir from Lorelai Gilmore. Sorry, Lauren Graham.

It’s a quick read that doesn’t rely on schmaltzy life lessons — in that regard, it’s definitely more of a comedy book than it is a deep, reflective memoir. Not that that’s a bad thing! Graham walks you through her life and career as if you’re two friends grabbing a cup of coffee. She cracks awkward jokes and makes weird, slightly dated references — just like Lorelai, hey!

Under the veneer of wit, it feels as if Graham is keeping us at a distance. Gilmore Girls was a giant of a show, but Talking As Fast As I Can barely scratches the surface. We’re treated to tidbits of information in a season-by-season breakdown (Scott Cohen is tall! Lauren and Emily Bishop were actually dear friends!), but there’s not a lot we can glean from it. We would have loved to hear more about the Palladinos (you just know there’s drama there) and a bit more about life on the Gilmore set.

In other words, oy with the poodles, give us some hot gossip!

Honestly though, if you’re looking for a light, cozy book that you can read in a couple of afternoons, you’ll love walking (or talking) a mile in Graham’s shoes.
