Cocoa butter can cure all
Good skincare trumps makeup skills.
Carbonated bubble masks, tomato sheet masks, rose water, tea tree oil. I look like a teenager and am almost 30.
Don’t fight your hair. Keep it moisturized, conditioned, clean. If it’s spectacularly frizzy one day, I’ll run some cocoa butter through it and go. No heat, no sticky products. My hair is curly AF and my hairdresser (stylist? What’s the right word? Are they the same thing?) was surprised at my lack of split ends. If you’re prone to frizz, satin pillowcases are a thing. I don’t like them because they feel gross when I’m trying to sleep.
Multivitamins and lots of water. It flushes gunk out of your system and makes your skin/hair/nails happy.
When in doubt, cocoa butter. Post-training hands and feet? Cocoa butter. Hair frizz? Cocoa butter. Tight, itchy scars? Cocoa butter. Dry skin? Cocoa butter. Bad day? Cocoa butter.
There’s an app for that?
Drinking water. I thought I used to drink a lot but I recently downloaded an app to keep track and it wasn’t near enough. Now I drink at least two litres a day and my skin has never been clearer!
The tape trick
Tape for perfect wings. Seriously. My wings are a mess unless I use the tape.
The mascara applies to *you*
To get the greatest lashes I’ve ever had, put the mascara wand near your lashes and blink forcibly down onto it. Kind of like you’re head banging your lashes. This gives them insane volume and length that pretty much lasts all day – and I don’t even have long lashes.
A laundry list of weird beauty hacks
Lashes: Before bed, swipe a bit of your favorite oil onto your lashes. Brush with a spoolie if you’ve got one, then cover with a thin layer of Vaseline. Careful not to get much on your waterline or you could get a sty. This has helped my lashes grow and stay strong, as they tend to dry out.
Moisturizer: Whenever you use Vaseline, use a different moisturizer under it. Vaseline by itself is not moisturizing (occlusive? Can’t remember). It traps whatever is under it. So use an oil first, let it absorb a bit, then put on that Vaseline.
Acne: Change your pillowcases often, or at least have something over it that you can change every night. Helps with acne.
Microwavable goodness (for legal reasons, do not try this at home)
I’ve microwaved aging Paint Pots and gel eyeliners that are starting to dry out so that they melt and get smoother and workable again. Throw ’em in the microwave for 30 seconds or so, or until they look a little shiny, mix them around a little with a spatula, and I can get another few weeks out of them!
I’m not proud.
No shame here
I don’t advocate this because I’m sure it’ll eventually bite me in the ass but if I’m having a really great eyeliner day or I’m just really really tired or lazy, I don’t take off my eyeliner at night and then the next morning I retouch it if needed and I’m good to go and just saved so much time.
Also I wear old t-shirts to sleep in and sometimes when I wake up in the morning, to exfoliate my lips, I just rub the little ribbed collar on my lips really hard and it works perfectly. I wash my shirt before wearing it again because I have some standards, though.
Dried up and better than ever
I leave certain mascaras slightly open for one night to dry them out some – Lancôme Dramatique comes to mind, best mascara ever once it’s a bit dry.
I also leave the caps off all my NYX micro brow pencils so they harden cuz I like how it applies that way.
A tall glass of water
Sometimes I dip my beauty blender in my glass of water from the night before if I forget to get it wet while I’m in the bathroom. It’s not like the water is gross or anything and I obviously throw it out when I’m done, but there’s an ick factor there for sure.
Living on the edge
I think this one more comes under “weird” rather than “gross,” but I have super dooper fine lashes – used to separate them after putting mascara on with a pin.. Somehow never poked myself! Real Techniques has bought out a lash and brow groomer that has a metal comb on one side so use that now. Slightly less dangerous.
A beauty hack from the ‘90s
I put the Monistat chafing gel on my face as a primer. Same ingredients, three times as cheap. But when I’m putting on my makeup and my friends see this, they sorta just back away. Don’t care!
This makes our pores scream
Back in high school when I used to wear two layers of full coverage foundation, I found it always looked better if I slept in it. I would literally cake it on before bed so I would wake up with a perfect base because of how everything melted into the skin and looked seamless and flawless. I could never do that now, but I get a similar effect by applying my makeup and hopping into the shower because the steam kind of melts the liquids and powders into my skin. Learned that from Lustrelux, haha.
Just girl things
I stick my mascara in my bra while I get ready to warm it up. I don’t know if that’s actually considered weird, but my friends laughed at me for it.
The multitasker
Use lip products as a cream blush. Most of the times I’ll dab my finger into the product before applying but sometimes i just smear it on my cheeks directly and then use my fingers to blend
Four minute face
Lazy AF? I use a jojoba oil as a moisturizer and primer…then buff in my KVD powder with a kabuki brush. Looks full coverage yet soft and glowing.
Takes me less than 4 minutes.
