Wearing a mask is an important part of protecting yourself and others from the spread of COVID-19. But it can also lead to breakouts if you’re not careful.
In Japan, news sources are teaching people how to combat “maskne” — an unfortunate result of having to wear a mask outdoors and in public spaces. When you’re wearing a mask, especially a heavy-duty one made of thick polyester or cotton, dirt and sweat can get trapped against your face. This can lead to all kinds of irritation and breakouts, like painful under-the-skin bumps that take ages to clear up.
I’ve struggled with mild acne since 2016, but have had pretty good skin days throughout quarantine. Here’s what I’ve been doing to steer clear of maskne (and, you know, COVID).
1. Practise mask hygiene
I only use cotton masks a few times and put them through a gentle wash at least once a week — I clean them in dish soap and hot water and let them air dry before they’re good to wear again.
If I can’t wash my masks in time, I’ll stick a layer of tissue between the mask and my face to prevent the soiled garment from coming into contact with my skin.
2. I skip wearing makeup most days
I know, I know, just because we’re in quarantine doesn’t mean we don’t want to feel pretty. But wearing a mask over layers of foundation and powder is going to give you serious breakouts.
Save the makeup for when you get home.
3. I keep my skin hydrated
Wearing a mask can be quite drying, so I make sure to give my skin a boost with toner. I keep a little spray bottle in my bathroom cabinet and spritz throughout the day and when I get home to make sure my skin is staying hydrated.
